ELEMENTS OF CIVIL ENGINEERING
ELEMENTS OF CIVIL ENGINEERING:
INTRODUCTION:
Civil engineering is the branch of engineering which deals with the planning ,designing, construction and maintenance of structure like buildings, roads, railways, airportbridges, docks, dams, water supply etc.
Civil engineering is the oldest branch of engineering which is growing right from stone age of civilization.
Branches of civil engineering:
The main branch of civil engineering are as follows :
- Building planning and construction
- Geo-technical Engineering
- Water Resource Engineering
- Environmental Engineering
Scope of Civil Engineering:
Civil engineering is the broadest and oldest branch of engineering. The main scope of civil engineering is:
- Maintenance of structure, etc
The scope of civil engineering may be divided into two groups:
- Scope according to the fieldwork
- Scope according to the function
Scope according to the fieldwork :
- Construction of heavy structure
- Transportation engineering
- Water resources engineering
- Geo- technical engineering
- Environmental engineering
I will only explain you the three types of fieldworks.
1) Building construction:
- Constructing residents building like bungalow, row house, apartment, etc
- Constructing public building like railway station, school, college, hospital, government office, etc
2) Construction of heavy structure:
- Constructing bridge , dams
- Constructing airport, harbour, port
- Constructing tunnels, cassion, cofferdam
3) Transportation engineering:
- Constructing road, highway
- Constructing railway, runway, airport
- Study of highway material
